Dish Network + Onstream
TV isn't designed for the desk. It's designed for the room.
No mouse, no remote. Just a remote, a screen and attention that constantly shifts.

The goal is to make a streaming experience feel effortless when every interaction happens from 10 feet away.
So how do you make a remote driven experience feel simple when there’s no mouse, no hover, and no room for precision?
That was the design problem behind DISH’s TV streaming experience.

Users found the navigation intuitive and easy to use.

The Problem
Live TV should give you control. This one didn’t.
How did I approach this?
I started with the viewing experience, not the feature list. I looked at where users were struggling to navigate, control playback, and find the actions they needed from across the room.
Limitation?
Existing system limitations, Designed for viewing, not focused interaction.
The live player lacked essential playback, navigation, recording, and caption controls.
Here's how I translated Dish's needs into a focused, scalable product experience.

User Research
Research without a UX Research team.
With tight timelines and no research team, I used fast, high signal methods to uncover usability issues and validate designs early.
I tested three core tasks on the existing live player to see where the experience slowed users down. The hands on evaluation revealed where navigation felt unintuitive and where the remote added unnecessary effort.
A lean research approach
More Perspectives,
Richer Insights
I partnered with developers and QA to pressure test key flows, uncover usability issues, and surface technical constraints early.

Developers Had problem accessing channels via the mini guide
3/5
Mentioned the overall UI to be cluttered causing visual load
10/15
Found the exit icon redundant and unnecessary.
Simple tasks took too many steps. Navigation, dense information, and redundant controls added friction across the player experience.
Simple Tasks, Unnecessary Friction
Ideation
Finding the sweet spot.
The goal was to balance what the existing player needed with what the product team wanted to introduce. I used both to define a focused direction for the next iteration.

Based on these learnings, we combined the strongest aspects of both directions into a single, more cohesive experience.
Solution
Innovation without losing Identity.
Evolved the existing player through targeted strategic enhancements that addressed core issues while preserving its established visual language.
